Clubhouse Renovation Plan - First Look Part 2

Carrying on from our last blog post, which focussed on the plans for the ground floor, today we will give you a first look at the plans for the first floor.

As we previously explained, it is important for us to make the facility useable by as many people, and groups, as possible, particularly scouts, school and cadet groups. This meant it was important to consider separate accommodation for adult staff and so on the first floor priority was made for two single bedrooms, and two double bedrooms (also configurable as twin rooms) which provides enough accommodation for up to 6 adult staff. It goes without saying that these rooms will also be bookable by any BYSA member when scout, school and cadet groups are not using the facility.

The Association has a very large amount of shooting equipment, acquired either through fundraising or which has been kindly donated by members of the shooting community, which is available for members and affiliates to lend, for free. However, one problem that the Association has faced over the past couple of years has been the lack of accessible storage space, which has meant that members have not always been to get access to this. We decided to use this opportunity to properly address that problem to better serve our members and also enable our future expansion to help more young shooters. The first floor layout prioritises a large, dedicated storage area that will enable the Association to properly organise our equipment so that it can be readily accessed by members.

Once these priorities were addressed, this left us with a large central area to play with. We decided that we wanted to retain some of the original full height of the lodge over the common living area, for aesthetic purposes, but we also wanted to provide some sort of classroom/general use area for training, provide something that would be useful for members pursuing places on teams, and be able to give something back to the more senior shooters who have been so instrumental in helping BYSA get to where it is today.

Many of the clubs on camp have SCATT facilities, or allow their common area to be used for SCATT training, however, post shooting, when you might be desperately trying to solve a problem to salvage your grand, these areas are typically unavailable as they revert to their primary use … bars and restaurants! We therefore decided that the best thing we could do with what would otherwise be ‘dead space’, which would provide the most benefit to all those people we wanted to help, would be to set up a permanent SCATT range. The classroom area/firing point area will be situated above the concrete armoury (so no floor bounce) and female ablutions, aiming through small floor level windows across the living room void to targets placed on the opposite wall.
